Cisa in Paris

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Cisa gave Paris some stickers and apparently Paris gave Cisa waterborne illness. Yuck.

From Cisa: I just came back from Paris. Everything was great, until the French decided to poison me with their tap water. I suffered from stomach flu the whole damn time, it really spoiled the trip. I enjoyed sightseeing and all, but not as much as I would have if I was healthy.

I didn’t put up nearly as much stuff as I wanted to, but putting up stickers was the last thing on my mind. I was too busy keeping my food inside lol.

I’ll upload some more pics later.
Thanks for watching :)

Buff Monster at Corey Helford Gallery September 5th

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

buffmonster_corey_helford

From our friend Buff:
Yes, it’s almost here. I’m hard at work on the paintings for my third solo show with Corey Helford Gallery, “Heavy Metal Ice Cream Smile.” I’ve really taken a different approach with this show; some pieces are really dark and some are exceedingly happy, but I think it’ll all make sense. And I will also be installing something fun in the gallery.

Holly Combs discusses Street Styles Workshop

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Street Styles is a workshop originally developed by Dave Warnke in San Francisco which teaches the basics of art using graffiti and street art to captivate students’ interest and help them develop their own artistic style and promote an overall attitude of respect. Holly Combs teaches the 3 P’s of Street Styles: Purpose, Placement, and Permission. Respect is the number one rule in Street Styles - respect for one’s self, school, neighborhood, community, and fellow artists. Students have fun while learning the basic principles of art such as line, color, balance, and style. Holly is available to teach Street Styles as a workshop, after-school program, or extended residency.

Klutch and Ripper 1331 at the Goodfoot August 27th

Monday, August 24th, 2009

klutch_ripper_posters

The Goodfoot will have an art opening, Last Thurs, Aug 27 from 5-2:30. The show will be up until Sept 24. The artists this month are Klutch (Portland) & Ripper 1331 (LA)

The original Vinyl Killers Klutch and Ripper 1331 have teamed up once again for what promises to be the blowout show of this year. They are being somewhat tight lipped about the details except to say that it is going to be positively negative. However, they have promised to stuff The Goodfoot to the rafters with corporate coffins, dream smashers, robotic headbangers, CEO zombies, teenage church burners, and much, much, more. Like a great band that just keeps getting better these two artists feed off of each other and continue to exceed their already high standards.

Klutch, best known as the cranky old punk responsible for the Vinyl Killers project, has been creating visual mischief for over two decades. From his work with the early 1980’s hardcore punk scene and the legendary Skull Skates, to painting backgrounds for Nike ads, his work has appeared around the world on t-shirts, skateboards, city walls, magazines, and galleries. In 2005 the suite he created at San Francisco’s Hotel Des Arts was featured in Time magazine’s annual “Best Of” issue.

Ripper1331 is an LA based artist who has spend the past 15 years working in Corporate America. Through a mixture of silk screening and stencils Ripper1331 wants to encourage the youth of today to go out and join Corporate America, soak in the culture, enjoy the perks and take that step towards becoming The Man they know they could be.

You can view and purchase art from the entire show after Sun, Aug 30th

Subliminal Projects Presents ‘Weekend Pacifists’ Opening August 22, 2009, 8-11 p.m.

mainSubliminal Projects presents
Weekend Pacifists

August 22 - September 19, 2009

Opening Reception:
Saturday, August 22, 8 - 11 p.m.

Weekend Pacifists, opening August 22nd at Subliminal Projects, showcases five artists whose lives and works have crisscrossed the skateboarding and lowbrow art worlds throughout the better part of the ‘90s and ‘00s. Collectively, their art is dotted with both whimsy and sociopolitics, not exactly the voice of a generation but maybe just a voice of a generation. Make that five voices, actually. Here’s what they each have to say about the show’s title:

Andy Jenkins “I work a regular schedule during the week and it’s anything but passive. On the weekend I become passive, as my personal work steers me around by the hands.”

Michael Myers “To me, the ‘Weekend Pacifist’ is about that feeling of hope and renewal that happens weekend after weekend. The weekend pacifist is about camaraderie, spirituality, gratefulness and the quest for being content in the now and for the week ahead.”

Chris Pastras “I’m a pacifist who loves the weekend, so I guess I fit the bill pretty well.”

Russ Pope “Weekend Pacifists? Pacified by the weekend on a weekly basis. Good stuff. Living everyday like it’s a weekend, not saving the good times for two days a week.”

Michael Sieben “Weekend Warriors is an album by Ted Nugent that was released in 1978. It’s also a term used to describe people who follow their passions on the weekend. The phrase ‘Weekend Pacifists’ describes an individual who is dedicated to their passion full time thus leaving the weekend open to relaxing or taking a break from the war. Hopefully that doesn’t sound too pretentious.”

About the Artists

To hear him say it, the crux of Andy Jenkins’ current work lies in his guilt: the guilt of one human’s consumption in a culture of excess. How does he channel it? The man is a creative packrat of amazing proportions. He saves every scrap of paper he comes in contact with. In 1995 he began using these notes, receipts, business cards, paper bags and envelopes in a series of works loosely entitled “Post Consumption Guilt.” He continues to nurture and refine this idea of regeneration today in his current series of paintings entitled “Ugly Beauty.” Most nights, you can find him hunched over his work on the floor of his kitchen studio or hunkered down behind the keyboard of his laptop. I doubt you’ll see him out and abo ut town. – Carl Sanger

Michael Myers is an artist and designer living in Southern California. Michael taught himself to draw and paint from an early age. He studied graphic design for a few years at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. In 1995 he began working professionally as a graphic designer in the skateboarding industry. Today he splits his time between painting and designing web properties from his home office/studio.

A native of New Jersey, Chris Pastras is known for a spontaneous creativity in everything he touches, primarily manifesting itself in art and skateboarding. Cofounder and longtime art director for Stereo Skateboards, he has had a huge influence on today’s skate and street art scene. His sketches bring together an imaginative, forward design and a whimsical touch that can only come from a true original. Chris currently resides in Los Angeles, California. More of his work can be seen at Stereosoundagency.com and Thelovestation.com.

Russ Pope’s paintings are a collision of motion and color. In Orange County, his favorite part of life is being outside with his family and spending late, lonely nights in his dirty, junk-filled studio painting to new wave, old punk, and even older blues and jazz. Art keeps Russ sane while juggling work in the skateboard industry, an overly active family, and gallery show deadlines. His inspiration comes from music, books, everyday people, architecture and his children’s artwork. Their art reminds him to create without concern for outside opinion or gallery walls.

Michael Sieben received his BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999. He was one of four founding members of Camp Fig Gallery (2002-2006) and a founding member of Okay Mountain Gallery (2006-present). His work has been shown throughout the U.S. and in Japan, London, Mexico, and Peru. Michael works as a professional illustrator and designer primarily within the subculture of skateboarding, and has been a staff writer and illustrator for the iconic magazine Thrasher since 2004. In 2009 Gingko Press will release a book of his recent work.
