Facadeprinter is a machine developed in Germany which combines the concept of a paintball gun with computer technology in order to create street art with an awesome result. We interviewed the creators of Facadeprinter about their new device…
Do you have a background in graffiti / streetart?
Not really. Only being graffiti-lovers since we were youngsters. With Public Enemy or Ice T on our walkmens, we grew up in different small towns in southern Germany without touching a spray can. Years later our studies in product-design brought us in touch with Media Arts and also evoke our affinity to mechatronics. Now we walk down the street with open eyes. The Facadadeprinter is our tool. It´s method of dot-drawing gives us the chance to develop an own style. We are exploring the potential of our invention. Our credo: New esthetices by new techniques.
How did you first come up with the idea for Facadeprinter?
We were sitting on the riverside when Martin observed a color splash on the pillar of a bridge. He thought “if there can be a single splash, there could be many, and these could form a picture”. This was the moment we wished to build a distance-printing-device.
In the two years it took to develop Facadeprinter what were some of the major challenges along the way?
Actually the whole began even earlier. When we started this project in our university days we were complete laymen. For sure our experiences in product-design encouraged us to go for it, but we had to read upon everything and ask specialists over and over again. We were so proud, when we came up with our first prototype FP01 and shot our first pink bunny. This was in 2005. After our studies we decided to bring Facadeprinting on another level. After planning the concept and requirements for the prototype FP02 we were looking for a programmer and engineer. We found Julian who is both and more to us! He became partner in the project. Even three of us struggled hard with a various range of topics between color balls and weapon laws.
How wide and high of an image area can it cover?
To get a satisfying result the printing distance is 12 meters. Maximum print size is around 8 x 10 meters. However the machine can be shifted sidewards to enlarge the artworks.
How long does it take to create an image?
This depends on the number of single color dots. The Facadeprinter can fire balls at a frequency of up to 5 shots per second. A single ball creates a dot on a surface up to 10 cm in diameter, therefore it would take around 30 seconds to fill up a square meter. For example the orange stone of 6 x 6 meters took 18 min to print.
Do you have plans for a multicolor Facadeprinter?
Yes, have a look on our Crab-Pincher, this was our first step into multicolor printing. About colors in generell you find informations in our FAQ section.
What are your other plans for the future?
Last December we founded our company Sonice Development GmbH in Berlin. We´ll improve the facadeprinter, build more printers, mechatronic tools and robotics. An we´ll use them.
Anything else?
Yes, please tear down the wall between Palestine and Israel or we have to print it.
